From my other posts I have created we know that High fructose corn syrup is an artificial sweetener that is added to almost all of today’s foods as a replacement for sugar because it is a “better” alternative. From the research I have done I can say that that is false. My reasoning behind this is coming from several examples I came across while I was doing my research. Various articles and blog entries keep showing the same common problems with this claim and they are as followed.
- Sugar in any form causes obesity and disease when consumed(Hyman, 2014)
- HFCS and cane sugar are NOT biochemically identical or processed the same way by the body.(Hyman, 2014). Note what this means is that the “sweetner/sugar” is now being reabsorbed into the bloodstream could lead to organ damages,Cancers and heart diesease
- Leads to Diabetes (Goodman, 2012)
All three of these claims are a reoccurring cause when it comes to the topic of High Fructose Corn Syrup. What this leads me to believe is that these problems are actually caused by HFCS or at least significantly influenced by HFCS. If you were to search up any controversy associated with High Fructose Corn Syrup any of these three topics would surely come into discussion and would have many supporting arguments to back them up.
For me personally I agree with these controversies. Any product that contains HFCS or any artificial sweetener for that matter can be directly link to all three of the above health problems plus several other minor health problems that effect our daily living habits. What needs to be done is companies need to start using natural sugars to replace these sweeteners that they use. By using Natural sugars you are significantly cutting back on the health risks and contributing majorly to decreasing the problem of obesity that has plagued North America over the past decades.

Their are several different opinions in the media about high fructose corn syrup. Many say it is just a alternative to sugar and many(Including myself) say it is very harmful to our body. Digging in I came across some articles on the internet that displayed many health problems that come with digestion of many processed foods and drinks containing High fructose corn syrup. There are several websites that all share the same stated health risks so i chose the two basic ones that provide the health risks up front.
- Diabetes (Mercola, 2014)
- Metabolic Syndrome (Mercola, 2014)
- Damage to your immune system (Mercola, 2014)
- rapid/increased aging process (Mercola,2014
- Variations of mercury poisoning ( Mercola, 2014)
- Weight gain and Obesity (Group,2010)

Just from looking at the health risks above it is easy to see that food or drinks containing High Fructose Corn syrup are harmful for your body. It can be proven that High fructose corn syrup is not a acceptable alternative for sugar in any way what so ever. High Fructose corn syrup is the added sweetener that is chemically similar that can be found in just about everything from muffins and cereals to carbonated drinks and juices. Just about every single person has probably ingested some food item containing H.F.C.S and I’m sure it wouldn’t take you long to find something in your fridge or cupboard that might contain High Fructose corn syrup. Now before you start getting rid of everything in your cupboard that contains High fructose corn syrup take a minute and examine all the evidence I will provide and make your own decision. Over the course of my 2nd semester at Fleming College I will be showing/providing evidence that will hopefully prove or disprove the theory that High fructose corn syrup is bad for you.
The reason I have chosen to write about this topic is that being an athlete I like to watch what I eat and I like to know what is in the food that i consume daily. That being said High fructose corn syrup is found in a lot of foods that are on the market now a days and I would like to believe that is not bad for you and its just a alternative to sugar. It will be interesting to see the final outcome as I’m a little skeptical on just how bad it is for you.
